PROFESSIONAL PROFILE
Craig Shand is a highly experienced Insurance Broker and Film & Television Production Insurance Specialist with more than 40 years of specialist experience arranging insurance for the screen industry across Western Australia, nationally and internationally.
As Director and owner of Stirling Insurance Broking & Business Consulting, Craig works with productions ranging from independent projects and documentaries through to television series and major feature films.
His career includes senior roles as a director/owner of Dry Shand Insurance Brokers and McKenna Hampton Insurance Brokers, together with experience as an employee and consultant with an international insurance broking firm.
Craig brings an extensive understanding of the particular risks and insurance requirements associated with screen production and works with producers to identify appropriate cover from early budgeting and pre-production through to production and completion.
STIRLING INSURANCE BROKING & BUSINESS CONSULTING
Specialist screen-industry knowledge · 40+ years of experience · Australian & international insurance market access
Craig works directly with producers, production companies, crew and contractors to understand their particular requirements and assist in identifying appropriate insurance solutions.
VALUE TO PRODUCTION
Craig brings something particularly valuable to producers — an insurance broker who understands film and television production, not simply insurance.
His extensive screen-industry experience means he understands the practical realities behind a production budget, the different risks created by cast, locations, equipment, sets, travel and production activities, and the importance of identifying insurance requirements early.
Craig can assist from the preliminary budgeting stage, providing indicative insurance costs before working with the production as further information becomes available and formal cover is required. This reflects the process outlined in Stirling’s Film Insurance Profile, where preliminary budgets can be used to estimate insurance costs before formal quotations are developed as a production progresses.
For interstate and international productions coming into Western Australia, Craig provides an experienced WA-based contact with access to Australian and international insurance markets and an understanding of the local production environment.
His long-standing involvement with Australian screen productions also means producers are working with someone who understands the terminology, processes and pressures of the industry.

INSURANCE FOR CREW & CONTRACTORS
As production contracts and liability requirements continue to evolve, more crew and independent contractors are being asked to hold their own Public Liability Insurance and other appropriate cover as a condition of engagement.
This is where Craig’s extensive screen-industry experience is particularly valuable.
Craig understands the different roles and working environments across film and television production and can assist crew in understanding the insurance requirements associated with their particular work — whether they are working on set, in a workshop, with equipment, vehicles or locations, or operating as an independent contractor.
Rather than approaching a broker unfamiliar with the screen industry, crew can speak with someone who understands how productions operate and can assist them in identifying appropriate insurance cover for their specialist work.
Stirling’s own production insurance guidance specifically highlights the importance of contractors and subcontractors considering their own Public Liability arrangements where they are operating as separate business entities.
