PROFESSIONAL PROFILE

Michael Thomas is a Perth-based Cinematographer specialising in commercials, corporate, branded content, travel and narrative productions, with experience working on projects across Australia and internationally since 2017.

After completing three years of screen and media training at North Metropolitan TAFE and the WA Screen Academy, Michael began working as a Cinematographer, Camera Assistant and Editor across a wide range of project types and production sizes. This breadth of experience has developed his adaptability and practical understanding of different production environments.

Michael’s work spans feature film, television documentary, commercials and branded content, with projects including The One Thing, Painkiller, Impossible Planet, Champions Gym, Readymix, Plico, Department of Social Services, Westin Brisbane and Marriott Resort Fiji Momi Bay.

A member of the Australian Cinematographers Society (ACS), Michael is also Vice-President and Treasurer of the ACS WA Branch. His cinematography has received ACS recognition, including a Silver Award for Champions Gym Commercial (2025) and a Bronze Award for the feature film Painkiller (2022).

Michael is passionate about understanding a project’s purpose and emotional intent, working closely with key creatives to solve problems and bring ideas to life. He adapts his visual style to each project, translating creative intent into emotive imagery through lighting, composition and camera to meet the needs of clients and productions.

He works with lighting, composition and camera choices to translate that creative direction into imagery, while using references and pre-production planning to support an efficient shoot.

His experience across different camera department roles, together with a Remote Pilot Licence (RePL) and his own professional camera, lighting, monitoring and drone equipment, provides productions with additional practical capability across traditional and aerial cinematography.
