Professional Summary

Giancarlo Mazzella is a highly experienced Unit Nurse, Health & Safety specialist and Cultural Navigator, bringing decades of experience across film, television, documentary, arts, cultural and community-based projects throughout metropolitan, regional and remote Australia.

His background spans major studio features, long-running television series, remote and expedition-style productions, arts and cultural projects, community health and extensive work across the Kimberley and Western Desert. This gives Giancarlo a rare combination of on-set medical capability, mental health and wellbeing support, logistics, remote risk management, cultural liaison and practical production knowledge.

Beyond his medical role, Giancarlo brings significant experience in mental health and community development nursing, giving him an additional capacity to support crew wellbeing during demanding productions. He is known for his calm, approachable presence and ability to support people experiencing work-related stress, personal difficulties or challenging circumstances, while understanding the pressures of long hours, remote locations and high-demand production environments.

His extensive regional knowledge and longstanding relationships with Aboriginal communities also bring valuable cultural understanding when productions are working on Country or engaging with Aboriginal communities.

Cultural Recognition & Connection

Giancarlo has spent decades living and working alongside Aboriginal communities across the Kimberley and Western Desert regions, developing longstanding relationships through his health, cultural, community and screen-industry work.

Known also as Tjungarrayi, Giancarlo is non-Indigenous and does not represent himself as First Nations. His cultural knowledge and community relationships have developed over many years through patience, learning, service and a genuine commitment to understanding the communities in which he works.

His standing within the East Kimberley has been formally acknowledged by the Kimberley Aboriginal Law and Culture Centre (KALACC), which describes the respect with which Giancarlo is received by senior men and women and younger community members across Balgo, Mulan and Bililuna. KALACC also recognises his ability to assist organisations in communicating with and accessing communities, and the value of his education in Wati ways.

This depth of experience underpins Giancarlo’s work as a Cultural Navigator, providing productions with culturally informed liaison, local knowledge and respectful engagement when working with Aboriginal communities and on Country.

A letter of recognition from KALACC’s Director of Cultural Programs is attached to Giancarlo’s profile.

Value to Production

Giancarlo brings a rare combination of medical expertise, mental health and wellbeing experience, production knowledge, remote-area capability and cultural understanding. He understands not only the practical demands of a working film crew, but also the pressures that long hours, remote locations and demanding production environments can place on people.

With more than a decade of professional experience in mental health and community development nursing, Giancarlo brings an additional level of crew support to set. He has been known to support crew experiencing work-related stress, personal difficulties and family bereavement, providing a calm, experienced and compassionate presence when people need it. He is also a natural motivator who understands the importance of crew morale and wellbeing during demanding productions.

His value to production includes:

  • On-set medical capability backed by decades of nursing and screen-industry experience
  • Mental health and wellbeing experience, providing an additional layer of support for crew
  • A calm and approachable presence for crew dealing with stress, personal difficulties or bereavement
  • Crew morale and motivation, particularly during demanding, long-running or remote productions
  • Remote-area knowledge across the Kimberley, Western Desert and challenging regional environments
  • Cultural navigation and liaison, supporting respectful engagement with Traditional Owners and Aboriginal communities
  • Established community relationships developed through decades of health, cultural and community work
  • Remote logistics and risk awareness, including expedition, marine and water-based environments
  • The ability to work effectively across Unit, Locations, Production and crew
  • The ability to bridge production requirements, crew wellbeing, community engagement, health and logistics within one highly experienced role

For the right production, Giancarlo offers considerably more than traditional Unit Nurse support. He brings together health, wellbeing, cultural navigation, regional knowledge and practical production experience, supporting both the production and the people behind it.
